Gatwick Airport South Terminal Security Upgrade

Gatwick Airport South Terminal Security Upgrade

Security at Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal has been revamped to make passing through it a speedier and more efficient process for passengers.

Unveiled on 11 October, the Gatwick Airport security development has cost £45m to implement and represents one aspect of the wider modernisation programme being carried out. Formerly owned by BAA, Gatwick’s been Global Infrastructure Partners’ since October 2009 and is now being put through a £1+bn overhaul.

The new Gatwick Terminal 2 security area aims to ensure that individual passenger screening times are kept below the five-minute mark and features 19 new lanes, two of them reserved for mobility-impaired passengers, or those travelling with small children. Visual display units have been placed ahead of these lanes, ensuring passengers are familiar with permissible and banned items, while there are additional screens displaying real-time data, highlighting the fastest-moving lanes at any one time.

Heathrow pods transport passengers to the future From Aeropark news

Heathrow Airport has today unveiled the Heathrow pod, the airport’s most innovative transport system and the first new example of transit technology in 100 years.

The unique Heathrow pod system – which started life as a Bristol University project – was developed by UK company Ultra and BAA and consists of 21 low energy, battery powered, driverless, zero emission vehicles capable of carrying four passengers and their luggage along a dedicated 3.8km guide way.

http://www.c-a-p.co.uk

The pods will carry the 500,000 passengers travelling between the Terminal 5 Business Car Park and the main terminal each year, giving them a smooth and virtually silent five minute ride. The journey is on demand and non-stop from start to destination at the touch of a computer screen.

Each temperature-controlled Heathrow pod has been designed for privacy and comfort and allows passengers to select their own direct destination. There are no timetables (and no waiting), as a central computer ensures that pods are distributed at each station according to passenger demand. When waiting for a passenger, the pods recharge themselves at battery points, so are always ready to go.

•The Heathrow pods are expected to eliminate 50,000 bus journeys on the roads around Heathrow each year
•Journey time to and from the terminal is congestion free and around ten minutes less for the average passenger (compared to the original buses)
•The pods can travel at up to 25 miles (40kph) per hour
•The pods use 70 per cent less energy than it takes to power a car, and 50% less than a bus
•The service runs 22 hours weekdays; 21 hours Saturday; 20 hours Sunday
•More than 100,000 passengers have used the pods since the service started on 18 April
•The Heathrow pod has taken six years to develop at a cost of £30m
The introduction of the first ever Heathrow pod system is in addition to Heathrow’s existing £4.8bn investment into improving passenger experience, while reducing the overall environmental impact of the airport’s operation.

Fraser Brown, Managing Director of Ultra PRT, said: “We’re very excited about the benefits that the Heathrow pod can offer Heathrow’s passengers. Its service is predictable, reduces waiting time and offers reduced journey times; it’s also an environmentally sustainable form of transport that ensures reduced emissions.

“There’s an enormous sense of pride for all the staff who were involved in turning this science fiction dream into a reality at Heathrow and demonstrating the best of British innovation.”

John Holland-Kaye, Commercial Director at Heathrow, said: “We’ve been listening carefully to our passengers as part of our plan to make every journey better at Heathrow. Passenger feedback has been amazing and positive Twitter comments abound. We love watching people’s reactions when they see the pods for the first time and then again when they step off just five minutes later at their destination.

“The Heathrow pods offer a personal, comfortable and reliable ride that is free of emissions. That’s why our excitement for this pioneering British technology is being shared by town planners, architects, other airports, business parks, campuses, retail and residential destinations from the US, Europe, India, Mexico and the UK, who believe that this system could revolutionise transport in urban environments.”

World’s Largest Airport Under Construction in China From Aeropark News

China has started to piece together what is set to become the largest airport on earth. Once finished, the world’s largest airport will be approximately equivalent to the island of Bermuda in size and boast no less than nine runways, allowing it to serve 370,000 passengers every single day.

To be constructed on a 21 square mile plot, Beijing Daxing International Airport is scheduled to become operational in 2015 and its development is taking place out of necessity, more than anything else. Beijing Capital International Airport’s Terminal 3 – which is larger than all five Heathrow terminals – was only opened three years ago but neither it nor the city’s other hub, Beijing Nanyuan, has the capacity to handle the sheer volumes of traffic expected to enter and leave China in coming years.

“The existing airport in Beijing has an annual capacity of 75million passengers”, China Civil Aviation University Professor Cao Unchun stated in comments quoted by The Telegraph. “Last year, it handled 73 million. In two years, it will be totally packed and it cannot be expanded infinitely.”

World’s Largest Airport
The prospect of the world’s largest airport brings with that of new rail services, too, since it will be sited some 60 minutes away from the centre of Beijing.

Beijing Capital Airport’s Terminal 3 was opened in connection with the 2008 Olympic Games. Flight-wise, the airport’s now at the point where no more can be added, according to Civil Aviation Administration head Li Jiaxing.

Beijing Daxing International Airport’s development programme reportedly got underway last month, with workers having erected signs at the site stating ‘Construction of a New Airport City for the Capital’.

Chinese Airport Construction
Last year, no less than 268 million people got on an airliner operating from one of China’s 175 airports – that’s over 16 per cent more than in the previous year.

Over 50 new airports are expected to be added between now and 2016 through a massive, ongoing Chinese airport construction programme while, over the coming 20 years, it’s thought that China will need to purchase over 4,000 new commercial aircraft, again to meet travel demand.

BagMessage: Real-Time Passenger Luggage Tracking from Aeropark News

A pair of IT firms is working in partnership to deliver a new concept in baggage handling to the global airport arena.

Together, Amadeus and SITA are advancing a technique that could be introduced in early 2012. Once activated, it would give airline passengers the power to check the location of their luggage, in real time, no matter where its location.

Passengers equipped with handheld devices, including smartphones, would be able to use a hi-tech tagging system that follows the journey of luggage across the world. That simply means that, from the moment a bag leaves a passenger’s possession, to the moment it’s picked up again at the other end, it can be pursued through technology – a facility that’s never before been directly available to travellers.

Passenger Luggage Tracking
According to Amadeus, once in place, the passenger luggage tracking system has the potential to seriously bring down the number of suitcases and bags lost or misplaced across the airline industry each year. That total, in 2010, ran to 29 million.

No less than 54 airports are set to receive the tracking system, known as BagMessage. Airports and airliners already have access to it but it’s currently off-limits to passengers themselves.

“In the future, passengers will get real-time updates on their luggage when SITA’s technology is used”, a representative for SITA explained.

BagMessage: Real-Time Tracking System
“The airport itself is one of the last frontiers in delivering the ‘total trip experience’. If airlines are to overcome this challenge, it is important that they address the issue of mishandled baggage, which is a persistent problem for the industry and a very disruptive issue for passengers”, Amadeus Airline IT’s Vice President, Julia Sattel, said in a statement on the BagMessage real-time tracking system.

“In fact it’s an area where technology can make a real difference, and Amadeus’ and SITA’s vision for the airport is to deliver solutions based on collaboration and data sharing between all relevant parties, including airlines, airports and ground handlers. Our work with SITA shows how sophisticated technology can deliver real improvements to the passenger experience.”

Aeropark news http://www.c-a-p.co.uk Efficient Boarding Method

Crowded and awkward aircraft boarding may soon be a thing of the past, potentially saving millions for airlines and airports. Passenger boarding tests have revealed that the most widely used method of boarding a plane is in fact one of the least efficient, leading the way for new a approach devised by the Astrophysicist Dr Janson Steffen.

Dr Steffen, based at the National Laboratory in Illinois, has put forward the aptly named “Steffen Method”, which favours seating passengers using alternating rows, almost halving boarding time when compared to filling seats through rear-to-front block boarding. Previously airlines had favoured the Wilma Method, which seats passengers from window seats outward.

The Steffen Method advocates boarding using every other window seat first, progressing from the rear of the plane forwards, for example, using seat 22A followed by 20A, 18A etc and then filling seats 21A and 19A. The method is repeated for the aisle seats in exactly the same way, building up layers of alternating seating.

Efficient Boarding Method

The Steffen Method was put to the test by television producer, Jon Hotchkiss, for the show This v That, which similar to Dr Steffen, was examining the problems raised by the passenger boarding process, such as congestion and overcrowding.

The Steffen Method, amongst others, were put through their paces using a scale model of a 758 aircraft and 72 volunteers, all with carry on luggage. The passenger boarding scenarios included Block Boarding, Wilma Method, Steffen Method and Random.

The results of the tests showed that block boarding was the least efficient method of boarding, coming in at just under seven minutes. Surprisingly, the typically chaotic Random method, actually fared much better at 5:45. This may be due to passengers being able to use the whole of the aircraft to fill available space, rather than queuing from the back and blocking access to available seating.

The Steffen and Wilma methods were the most efficient boarding methods, with Wilma coming in at 4:13 and Steffen at an impressive 3:36. As reported by the BBC, Dr Steffen stated that the results reflected the study he made in 2008.

Manchester Airport News from Aeropark http://www.c-a-p.co.uk

Manchester news
UK authorities have evacuated Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport Wednesday morning for a bomb scare after a suspicious package was reported to police at around 8.30 BST this morning.

Manchester Police have confirmed that bomb disposal experts are investigating a suspicious device and a man is currently being held under the Terrorism Act after the police were alerted to the ‘suspicious package’ was found inside Terminal 1 at the airport this morning.

Bomb Scare

The alarm was raised shortly after 8.30am when security officials became concerned about the bag being carried by a male passenger. The item is being treated as ‘suspicious’ and has not been confirmed to be a bomb. The airport terminal was evacuated as a precaution

An airport spokesman has confirmed that a small number of flights had been delayed with the suspicious bag, that raised the bomb scare, was either picked up as suspicious by the airports security staff or X-ray machines in the departures area.

“It is currently being examined and the passenger was taken away,” the spokesman added.

Passengers due to travel from Terminal 1 have been urged to come to the airport as planned but have been told to allow extra time. It has been confirmed by Manchester Airport that around 11 departing flights have already been affected – but arrivals are operating as normal. An airport spokesman said a cordon had been put in place and police were now at the scene, adding that terminals two and three were still operational.

Aeropark News Airport Parking Greeks begin 24-hour strike

A 24-hour public transport and taxi strike is snarling traffic in the Greek capital, while a work stoppage by air traffic controllers has forced airlines to cancel or reschedule flights as unions lash out against more austerity measures.

Today’s strikes in Athens come a day after Greeks were hit with another round of tax hikes and pension cuts as part of the government’s scramble to keep international bailout payments flowing and soothe global market fears that Greece will default.

With all forms of public transport, including the metro, buses, trams, trains and taxis on strike, Athenians struggled through traffic-clogged streets to make their way to work on what has been designated World Carfree Day.

Air traffic controllers will walk off the job for three hours in the afternoon.

The Greek cabinet ramped up its austerity drive last night in a fresh bid to secure payment of a crucial €8 billion bailout loan before the country runs out of cash within weeks.

The plan will cut some pensions by 20 per cent, put 30,000 state workers on 12 months’ notice with a 40 per cent pay cut and extend by at least one year a new property tax.

After a summer lull in protests, Greek unions are already planning a new wave of strikes.

The new budget plan follows blunt warnings from Germany and other euro zone powers that the country’s next tranche of aid will be withheld if it does not take action to meet the terms of its agreements with its lenders.

This has stirred mounting fear of a Greek default and a big escalation of tension in financial markets.

At the United Nations General Assembly, US president Barack Obama yesterday called for co-ordinated global action to tackle the financial crisis.

Mr Obama appealed for “urgent and co-ordinated action” by the international community to meet the challenges of the global economic crisis.

“Three years ago, we confronted the worst financial crisis in eight decades. That crisis proved a fact that has become clearer with each passing year – our fates are interconnected; in a global economy, nations will rise, or fall, together,” he said.

“Around the world, recovery is fragile. Markets are volatile. Too many people are out of work . . . We acted together to avert a depression in 2009. We must take urgent and co-ordinated action once more,” he added.

However, a senior European source said no initiatives were in the works beyond an ongoing manoeuvre by global central banks to provide emergency dollar loans to weakened euro zone banks.

In a widely anticipated effort to stimulate the flagging American economy, the US Federal Reserve took steps last night to reduce long-term interest rates and increase its support for housing.

The new Greek plan is still subject to the approval of euro zone finance ministers and the EU-IMF troika, which withdrew a mission to Greece three weeks ago in a dispute over a succession of missed targets in its rescue programme.

After two nights of telephone talks, top-level inspectors from the troika are returning to Athens to sign off on the new measures.

Greek ministers met for several hours yesterday to approve the plan. As their meeting continued, the country’s biggest unions declared plans to contest the endeavour with two days of strikes next month.

“The measures taken today allow us to comply with the bailout plan through 2014,” said Greek government spokesman Ilias Mossialos.

“The discussions with the troika will be completed after the arrival of inspectors early next week.”

The plan comes amid acute doubt in markets about the viability of the country’s rescue programme.

While those concerns find increasing echoes in official and diplomatic circles, European leaders have resolved to stay the course with Greece. European Union officials fear, however, that the new plan could yet lead to the collapse of the administration led by prime minister George Papandreou.

The government has a four-seat majority and internal divisions emerged last summer over a previous austerity effort led Mr Papandreou to appoint his main political rival, Evangelos Venizelos, as finance minister.

Ahead of its annual meeting this weekend in Washington, the International Monetary Fund issued a renewed warning about the fragility of Europe’s banks.

In a new report, the fund said time was running out to tackle weaknesses in the world financial system.

The “global stability report” added to pressure for a big recapitalisation of the banking sector by saying debt crisis has generated some €300 billion in credit risk. This figure is €100 billion greater than previous estimates.
